The House
The house at 717 has watched life unfold along Prinsengracht for centuries. Its rear building dates from the 17th century, while the canal-facing townhouse was added around 1810—an elegant expression of Amsterdam’s Empire period.
Together, they form a house of two distinct ages, shaped by generations of lives and layered with stories. Marble floors, timber shutters, original stair details and decorative plasterwork remain, alongside the gentle irregularities that give a historic home its character.
Over time, the house has served several social and charitable purposes, including an association with the Wilhelminahuis, before becoming an intimate hotel in the 1990s. Following a major restoration in 2022, 717 now begins its next chapter as The Zetter’s first home beyond London.
Collected Over Time
Designer James Thurstan Waterworth has brought the house’s different histories together without disguising its age or original character.
Antiques, artwork, collected furniture, warm woods, aged brass and richly tactile fabrics sit alongside the building’s period details. The pieces span different places and eras, giving the interiors the feeling of a well-travelled private home that has evolved naturally over time.
Nothing feels overly matched or newly placed. Instead, there is character, patina and a sense of discovery at every turn—elegant without being formal, eclectic without feeling contrived and quietly luxurious throughout.
A Personal Kind of Hospitality
With just 24 bedrooms, The Zetter 717 offers a more personal way to experience Amsterdam. No two rooms are the same, and each responds to its own setting within the house, whether overlooking Prinsengracht, the courtyard garden or a quieter corner of the residence.
The guest-only Library and Garden Room provide places to settle in throughout the day, while warm, intuitive service replaces unnecessary formality. It is a hotel designed to feel lived in rather than passed through: a little historic, a little eccentric and entirely its own.
